Visiting Instructor - Pathology Resident - College of Veterinary Medicine

Job Description

State of the Art Facility: The Anatomic Pathology Residency Program at Midwestern University's College of Veterinary Medicine is housed in a purpose-built, state of the art pathology facility on the Glendale, AZ campus. The Diagnostic Pathology Center (DPC) has a 5,300 sq-ft, full-service necropsy floor, a gross pathology teaching theatre, a dedicated histopathology laboratory, downdraft and ventilated trim and tissue storage areas, an 800 sq-ft BSL3-capable necropsy suite, and 1200 sq ft of classroom/teaching space. The facility is adjacent to the Companion Animal Clinic, which is a 111,000 sq. ft small animal teaching hospital, and the Equine Bovine Center, a large animal teaching facility that includes indoor equine and bovine teaching areas and housing for university-owned cattle and horses.

Excellent Teaching Opportunities: The pathology program provides a 2-quarter, second year veterinary student pathology course, more specialized third year veterinary student electives, and a continuous 4-week, fourth year veterinary student clinical rotation. The pathology team presents weekly histopathology and gross pathology rounds that are open to the entire campus and is very involved in collaborative campus and wider community projects.

Residents work directly with board-certified anatomic pathologists, and have access to the department’s clinical pathology service, with three board-certified clinical pathologists also be available for additional training. Qualification for admission requires a DVM from an AVMA accredited veterinary school. One year of clinical practice or internship experience is desired.

Innovative Case Load: The DPC operates as an academic/diagnostic hybrid, receiving roughly equivalent caseload from outside submissions and Midwestern clinics. Strong relationships with area law enforcement, an excellent shelter medicine program, and dedicated faculty and staff have created opportunities to develop new approaches in forensic investigations. A rapidly growing faculty with expertise in zoo and wildlife medicine, pathology, and microbiology are generating opportunities for collaborative research and diagnostic projects with zoo and wildlife organizations throughout the Phoenix Valley.

Excellent Faculty, Staff, and Working Environment: The residency program includes 5 anatomic pathology faculty, 3 clinical pathology faculty, a pathology case coordinator, and managers and technicians for the histopathology and necropsy laboratories. The DPC prides itself on maintaining a close, team atmosphere in which all members contribute to veterinary pathology education and training.
