Job Description

The Category Management Associate is a key role that will provide support to numerous initiatives within the Procurement Organization.  This position will provide critical support and guidance to key Sourcing activities such as RFI/RFP preparation and analysis, supply base optimization, departmental process improvement initiatives, support of standard operating procedure development and supplier management.


  • Procurement Sourcing:
    • Execute procurement strategies and processes as defined by the Procurement Director or Manager of Procurement operations.
    • Manages all RFQ initiatives for the business development team. Ensures best pricing provided and responsible for quality control of RFQ responses.
    • Assist Category Manager in reducing supply base by effectively moving parts and services to preferred suppliers via RFQ and sourcing events.
    • Support savings goals assigned to Category Managers by analyzing various spend reports and identifying trends and seeking opportunities to leverage volume in order to reduce costs.
    • Source and identify pricing and suppliers of new parts specifically for customer plant expansions.
    • Periodic analysis of spend data to identify areas positioned for sourcing events.
    • Support Category Managers to create RFI/RFP packages for all categories of spend and assist in the dissemination and collection of supplier bid packages.
    • Support the optimization and scenario planning for best fit supplier selections with our clients.
    • Provide recommendations to Category Managers for maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness.
    • Manage category spend for several clients and drive savings in order to meet company goals and objectives.
  • Procurement Process Improvement:
    • Contribute to development of standard operating procedures for identified key Procurement processes.
    • Support development and track departmental performance metrics and KPI’s (i.e. savings, spend, contract management, compliance) to drive Procurement strategy development and implementation.
    • Assist Buyers and Procurement operations to resolve errors and exceptions that are preventing the normal flow of Purchase order activity.
    • Create workflow and business process procedure documents where appropriate.
    • Provide recommendations for efficiency gains and improvement in our process.
    • Ensure continuous improvement of the data management; spend analytics, category management, strategic sourcing, contract management, and supplier management processes.
    • Strive to continuously improve Procurement performance by utilizing and understanding best practices, lessons learned and industry trends through participation in industry associations.
  • Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) Activities: 
    • Measure supplier performance through the use of actionable scorecards.
    • Develop and process Supplier Corrective Action requests (SCAR) to ensure supplier compliance to SDI/Customer goals and objectives.
    • Identify and qualify competitive new suppliers for goods and services and work closely with Buyers to select appropriate suppliers for non-stock purchases.
    • Facilitate setting up new suppliers and obtain required information as requested by the Supplier Relationship Manager.
    • Assist Category Manager in reducing supply base by effectively moving parts and services to preferred suppliers.
    • Support creation of appropriate KPI ‘s, analysis, and disseminate as necessary.
    • Help manage quarterly business reviews (QBR) with SDI’s strategic suppliers.
    • Develop analysis to help drive continuous improvement plans to drive improved supplier performance and collaboration.


  • Minimum 4-year degree from an accredited university or 5-7 years’ procurement or relevant purchasing experience
  • Must be comfortable in a growing team environment where assigned duties and tasks are evolving as the organization grows
  • Good negotiation and supplier management skill set
  • Experience and technical proficiency with appropriate analytical tools (Excel, SQL, Access, PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, and MS Project).
  • Experience with ERP procurement systems is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, business process analysis and problem solving capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills.
  • MRO and/or Inventory Mgmt. experience or general knowledge of inventory control processes a strong plus.
  • Possessing basic understanding of Strategic sourcing process; Request for Information/Quotation/Proposal and response evaluation; Supplier Relationship Management process; Contract Management compliance tracking and reporting and business case development, is a plus.
