Job Description

The Family Based Counselor functions as a vital part of a two-person clinical team (alongside a Family Based Therapist) to provide intensive, in-home family therapy services to children, adolescents, and their families. This role focuses on helping clients navigate emotional challenges, improve communication, and strengthen family relationships through evidence-based therapeutic practices. The counselor will work collaboratively with families, often in their homes and communities, to address complex dynamics and promote a healthier family environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct Client Service: Provide intensive in-home and community-based therapy to children, adolescents, and their families, often at times most convenient to the family, including 2-3 evenings per week.
  • Team Collaboration: Work in a cohesive team with a Family Based Therapist to deliver comprehensive family-based treatment.
  • Assessment & Treatment Planning: Participate in conducting comprehensive assessments of family dynamics and individual needs, and contribute to the development and implementation of tailored, evidence-based treatment plans.
  • Therapeutic Interventions: Facilitate individual and family therapy sessions, utilizing techniques consistent with Ecosystemic Structural Family Therapy (ESFT) after undergoing specialized training. Focus on improving communication, conflict resolution, and developing coping strategies.
  • Crisis Intervention: Participate in crisis planning and prevention, and be available for on-call duties on a rotating basis to provide support to families in crisis.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate and up-to-date confidential client files and records, ensuring all documentation is completed within policy timeframes and in compliance with ethical and legal standards.
  • Interagency Collaboration: Collaborate with other involved professionals, educators, and community resources to ensure holistic support for families. Attend interagency meetings and treatment team meetings as required.
  • Professional Development: Actively participate in a three-year training curriculum in Ecosystemic Structural Family Therapy through The Philadelphia Child and Family Therapy Training Center, as well as other annual training opportunities. Engage in individual and peer supervision.
  • Travel: Travel extensively to and from client homes and community settings across assigned counties (Philadelphia, Bensalem, Northampton, Malvern, Lansdale, Pike, Lehigh, Carbon, Montgomery, and Delaware Counties). Reliable transportation is essential.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field (e.g., Counseling, Sociology).
  • Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of direct care experience working with children/adolescents in a clinical or social service program (e.g., Child and Adolescent Social Service Program - CASSP).
  • Clearances: Ability to obtain and pass required clearances: Child Abuse Clearance, Criminal Background Check, FBI Fingerprinting, and Drug Screen.
  • Transportation: Valid Driver's License and reliable transportation are essential for job responsibilities, including travel to client homes.
  • Availability: Must be available to work 2-3 evenings per week to accommodate family schedules.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Proof of Covid-19 vaccination, or a Medical Exemption, or Religious Exemption.
