JOB SUMMARY: The Division Director, Organizing will be responsible for overseeing and leading New Settlement’s organizing work to combat displacement and build tenant power in the Southwest Bronx. This includes expanding and deepening CASA and PAC’s membership, advancing leadership development, providing strategic direction for campaigns, managing and developing staff, and overseeing fundraising efforts. The Division Director will ensure that all CASA and PAC activities are aligned with the organization’s long-term vision and work toward sustainable community-driven power-building.
Job Duties include but not limited to:
Membership & Leadership Development:
- Membership Growth & Engagement: Lead efforts to expand CASA and PAC’s membership base and increase engagement, with a focus on building leadership from within the community.
- Leadership Cultivation: Oversee the development of CASA and PAC’s leadership pipeline, including one-on-one meetings with leaders, organizing leadership development training, and fostering member-driven campaigns.
- Community Organizing: Guide and support member-driven campaigns, ensuring leadership development remains central to CASA and PAC’s organizing strategies.
Staff Development & Supervision:
- Staff Supervision: Provide direct supervision to senior organizing staff (e.g., Deputy Director, Lead Organizers) through weekly supervision meetings, reviewing work plans, and providing regular feedback.
- Team Building & Training: Coordinate regular staff meetings, facilitate trainings, and organize retreats to foster team cohesion and enhance staff skills.
- Hiring & Onboarding: Lead recruitment, hiring, training, and onboarding processes for organizing staff, ensuring a commitment to New Settlement’s Organizing vision and values.
- Workplace Culture: Foster a culture of inclusivity, professional growth, and self-care, ensuring staff feel supported and are given opportunities for development.
Campaign Oversight & Strategic Direction:
- Campaign Management: Supervise and provide strategic oversight for CASA and PAC’s ongoing and future campaigns. Review and provide feedback on campaign materials, attend planning meetings, and help refine campaign strategies.
- Campaign Strategy: Lead the development of campaign goals and tactics, ensuring that CASA and PAC campaigns are impactful, member-led, and aligned with the organization’s larger goals.
- Strategic Support: Provide guidance and strategy support for citywide campaigns and other advocacy initiatives. Help align New Settlement’s Organizing work with broader regional or national movements for racial and economic justice.
- Advocacy & Representation: Represent CASA and PAC in external meetings, coalitions, and advocacy efforts as needed, ensuring that CASA and PAC’s campaigns are part of larger efforts to build tenant power and combat displacement.
Fundraising & Financial Oversight:
- Fundraising Strategy: Lead efforts to raise funds for organizing campaigns in CASA, PAC, and New Settlement. This includes managing relationships with existing funders, identifying new funding opportunities, and ensuring the organization meets its fundraising goals.
- Grassroots Fundraising: Revitalize and strengthen New Settlement’s grassroots organizing fundraising model, including organizing events and developing donor engagement strategies.
- Financial Management: Oversee financial reporting, budgeting, and ensure that fundraising activities are aligned with CASA, PAC, and greater New Settlement financial goals.
Communications:
- Internal & External Communications: Oversee the creation of press releases, media advisories, and other communications that support New Settlement’s Organizing campaigns and advocacy efforts. Ensure that messaging aligns with New Settlement values and priorities.
- Staff Support: Provide resources and support to organizing staff in communications efforts, helping them craft compelling messages and materials to advance New Settlement’s Organizing goals.
Organizational Participation & Administration:
- Collaboration: Meet regularly with the Director of Organizing to share updates on CASA’s activities and ensure strategic alignment across the organization.
- Cross-Departmental Engagement: Participate in New Settlement activities, including leadership meetings and collaborative initiatives.
- Administrative Oversight: Manage administrative tasks such as ordering supplies, handling invoices, and ensuring that reporting deadlines are met.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- Organizing & Campaign Experience: A seasoned grassroots organizer with at least 10 years of experience leading successful, multi-year community organizing campaigns, including policy advocacy, civic engagement, and leadership development.
- Leadership Development: Proven experience developing grassroots leaders and managing leadership teams to drive long-term organizing goals.
- Strategic Vision & Tactics: A creative strategist with a strong understanding of how to integrate organizing, policy, legal, research, communications, and other tactics into successful campaigns.
- Coalition Building: Skilled at building and maintaining coalitions across diverse sectors, including grassroots organizations, legal and policy groups, and research entities.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to represent CASA and PAC effectively in public settings and provide clear communication to staff and members.
- Management Experience: At least 8 years of experience supervising and mentoring staff and volunteers, including experience with recruitment, retention, and professional development.
- Fundraising & Financial Oversight: Demonstrated experience in fundraising and financial management, including grant writing, relationship-building with funders, and managing budgets.
- Program Management: Strong experience in program development, implementation, evaluation, and budgeting, with a track record of delivering results.
- Cultural Competency: Deep knowledge of and commitment to working with low-income communities of color, especially in the Bronx.
- Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish (speak, read, and write) is required.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree preferred but not necessary).
