OR Registered Environmental Health Specialist I/II

(Previously called Sanitarian in Training or Registered Sanitarian)


The Environmental Health Specialist in Training (EHST) or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) is responsible for inspecting, investigating and enforcing Ohio Administrative Code, Ohio Revised Code and/or Franklin County District Board of Health Sanitary Regulations pertaining to food service operations, retail food establishments, and schools.


Duties Include:

  • This position focuses on providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers in accordance with the mission, core values, and purposes of Franklin County Public Health.
  • Performs inspections, re-inspections and investigations according to standardized procedures and prepares reports which determine compliance with state and local codes and regulations for Environmental Health programs under the supervision of a Registered Sanitarian
  • Other related duties as assigned.


  • Must be a registered Environmental Health Specialist in Training or Registered Environmental Health Specialist with the State of Ohio;
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, as approved in OAC 4736-8-01;
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license and ability to meet insurability requirements; some evening and weekend hours required; and
  • Experience in food safety or Serv Safe preferred.



Hiring Salary:

  • $23.09 - $26.56/hour for Environmental Health Specialist in Training
  • $25.40 - $29.21/hour for Registered Environmental Health Specialist I
  • $27.96 - $32.15/hour for Registered Environmental Health Specialist II
  • This is a non-exempt position
