Founded in 1980, Neighborhood Self Help by Older Persons Project (SHOPP) is a non-profit social service agency located in the Bronx serving older adults and families caring for an ill, frail or disabled loved one.  SHOPP’s mission is based on the philosophy of self-help. We believe that older adults are capable of helping themselves and helping others improve their capacity to deal with the physical, emotional, social, and financial challenges they face as they age.   

SHOPP has several service programs in the Bronx that includes Community Care Network Program; VIP Elder Abuse Program and Crime Victims; NY Connects of the Bronx; Casa Boricua, Leon, Guess and Soundview Older Adult Centers; Case Management & Friendly Visiting Program; Caregivers Program and Lafayette Estates NORC Program.    

SHOPP’s staff must be prepared to utilize the agency’s philosophy of self-help and mutual assistance to enable participants to gain and express positive, psychological, and social well-being as an outcome of their involvement in SHOPP programs. SHOPP participants are provided with opportunities to: access benefits and entitlements; serve as volunteers; join planning and support groups; take advantage of training programs, participate in nutritional, educational, recreational and health promotion activities; and participate in community service and leadership development.     

The Lafayette Estates NORC Group Work Coordinator is responsible for the provision social, recreational, arts and cultural services NORC participants on-site and virtually and Friendly Visiting Services. The Group Work Coordinator reports directly to the Program Director. The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree the field of aging or Associates Degree with a minimum of three years’ experience working in a social service setting in the field of aging. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and experience with older adult community-based services are also required. Bi-lingual skills in Spanish preferred.  

 The Group Work Coordinator is specifically responsible for the following tasks: 

  •  Planning monthly activity calendar in partnership with center staff and volunteer activity leaders.  
  • Partner with the peer leaders, participants and program facility host staff to plan and implement a specially tailored program of classes, discussion groups and educational/ recreational, arts and other activities aimed at enhancing mutual aid and the strengthening of informal social support networks; 
  • Organizing and conducting special programs, events and off-site trips 
  • Plan, develop and implement online virtual programming. 
  • Provide in home and virtual friendly vising services . 
  • Maintain participant case records, work logs and performance target outcome tracking, and statistical reports utilizing the STARS database and other related reporting systems; 
  • Participate in SHOPP staff training programs, staff meetings, Advisory Committee Meetings and other meetings as assigned; 
  • Recruit volunteers and monitor work logs; 
  • Develop partnerships and linkages with community groups; 
  • Monitoring and reporting observations on participants’ status; ensure participant safety. 
  • Maintaining necessary equipment and supplies required for successful completion of activity. 
  • Complete other duties appropriate to the position as assigned by the Program Director/Senior Coordinator Of Programs.
