Organizational Overview
The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for a Pulsed Power Electrical Engineer to plan, coordinate, and perform all phases of the engineering work for various size projects.  The ideal candidate will participate individually or as part of a research team to provide engineering expertise for facility and/or high voltage equipment.  The incumbent may oversee the work of engineers, drafters, technicians, and others who assist in assignments. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, operation, and troubleshooting of high voltage systems
  • Development and improvement of existing high voltage systems
  • Defining project goals, tasks, and resource requirements
  • Building and evaluating prototypes and models, and the construction and testing of systems and equipment
  • Resolve or assist in the resolution of complex problems with design requirements and conventional materials independently or as a team member

Position Requirements

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or closely related field of study
  • Minimum three (3) years progressively responsible full-time related work experience
  • Knowledge of current principles and practices of high voltage and pulsed power engineering
  • Knowledge and experience with high voltage solid state technology
  • Knowledge and experience with high frequency measurement techniques
  • Design experience of pulsed power circuit or high-power systems
  • Circuit design and analysis software experience
  • Clear and concise communication skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master’s Degree in electrical engineering or close related discipline
  • Five (5) years full time engineering work experience
  • Computer programing capabilities
  • Familiarity with principals of high frequency circuit and systems
  • Control system experience
  • Research experience in pulsed power engineering
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulation software and modeling
  • Knowledge and experience of high voltage power converter and high voltage pulse modulator
  • Project management experience

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Will be required to climb ladders to varied heights
  • Will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker
  • Will be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support operation and critical mission
