Organizational Overview

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department, Cryogenics Operations currently has a full-time opportunity for an Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technical Specialist. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintainance, calibration, installation, troubleshooting and repair of instrumentation and electronic control systems, using test measurement and diagnostic equipment. This role will also assist staff with design, development, testing, and manufacture of complex control systems. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Calibrate, maintain and repair complex electronic and mechanical controls systems
  • Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and systems
  • Read blueprints, schematic drawings, and engineering instructions for repair,modification, fabrication and assembly of electronic systems 
  • Write reports record data on testing techniques, laboratory equipment, and specifications
  • Assemble chassis using electrical wiring and mechanical fabrication techniques
  • Upgrading of associated electronic equipment and systems

Position Requirements

  • Associates degree in electrical technology or the equivalence of a technical institute
  • At least four years of full time relevant work experience including calibration, maintenance and repair of complex electronic and mechanical control systems
  • Experience in the field of pressure, temperature, level and flow instrumentation, and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based control systems
  • Familiarity with the use of standard test and measurement equipment, such as function generators, oscilloscopes, multi-meters, and pressure standards is essential
  • Ability to repair, modify and build electrical/electronic systems from schematic drawings and assemble chassis using basic mechanical fabrication techniques
  • Must be self-motivatedand be able to work with minimum supervision
  • Clear and concise communication skills
  • Must be available to work off hours and respond to emergencies as required

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  •  Analog and digital electronics, PLC Ladder Logic, Instrument sensor type & function, electric motor control, and basic computer skills
  •  Basic machine shop skills

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Must be able to work outdoor and work around rotating equipment
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work at elevated hights
  • Must be able to wear an air escape hood

  • Must have a valid drivers license
