Organizational Overview

The Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) designs, builds, and tests superconducting magnets for use in particle accelerators world-wide.  The SMD also builds magnets for various other applications (e.g., Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) and provides magnetic measurement services lab-wide.

Position Description

The Superconducting Magnet Division has an opening for an Associate Staff Engineer to assist with the design of superconducting magnets and tooling and to support the associated manufacturing efforts. This position performs specific and limited portions of analysis, design and general execution of parts of a broader engineering assignment under the direction of a more experienced engineer.  This position involves electro/mechanical, machine programming development and maintenance of an advanced semiautomatic superconducting coil winding machine. The incumbent in this position will interface heavily with an international and multicultural scientific community in a dynamic environment.

Position Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Solid modeling and engineering drawing creation of superconducting magnets and magnet tooling, both parts and assemblies, using CREO software
  • Electro/mechanical and machine programming development and maintenance of an advanced semiautomatic superconducting coil winding machine
  • Process engineering of Direct Wind superconducting coil technology

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or mechatronics
  • Familiarity with solid modeling software
  • Knowledge of motion control and motion programming
  • LabVIEW software
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills
  • Computing proficiency to include daily productivity applications: email, excel, word

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Finite element analysis of thermal and structural components using ANSYS workbench
  • Familiarity with Creo solid modeling software
  • Ultrasonic welding knowledge
  • Machine tool practices

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Hand/eye coordination
  • Moderate lifting (up to 30 pounds)
  • The ability to climb a ladder
