Organizational Overview

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department has a position open in the  Power Distribution Group. The Collider-Accelerator Department is looking for a Power Distribution Electrical Supervisor to assist the Power Distribution Group Leader to coordinate and direct the work.

This individual will design, maintain, build, and operate the 208/120 V, 480 V, 4160 V and 13.8kV experimental power distribution systems in the C-AD complex. This role will review the electricians’ training records, provide training or assist in enrollment of training to ensure compliance with required courses, as well as signing the electrician’s time card. The individual will provide daily safety and pre-job briefings and maintain the tracking of the working hours for each project work order. The power system serves the house power, lightings, HVAC, water pumps, cooling towers, overhead cranes, air compressors, helium compressors, control racks, magnet power supplies, and RF cavity amplifiers and power supplies. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • First-line supervision of skilled craft work performed by Trade Electricians
  • Direct the work of electricians in constructing, installing, maintaining, repairing and operating electrical systems, equipment, controls and related devices. Direction includes assigning work, training, scheduling, grievance handling, and technical direction
  • Coordinates all work of the unit
  • Maintains records on work performed and employees and reports on work of the unit
  • Work closely in a team environment and coordinate with other craft supervision, engineers, and department coordinators on work planning, tracking, and completion of work orders
  • Supply technical assistance and information on work of the unit to Department customers, staff, and other supervisors
  • Able to coordinate with the Energy & Utilities division for substation power shut down and restore
  • Coordinate with riggers for transporting heavy equipment and mounting equipment
  • Become Work Control Coordinator and perform work planning and hazard control through on the job training
  • Become EEI (Electrical Equipment Inspector)  and LEI (Local Electrical Inspector) through on the job training
  • Become Primary Authorized Worker for Lockout/Tagout operation through on the job training
  • Mark up the construction drawings for variations
  • Coordinate work control for the contractors performing the projects at C-AD
  • Participate in the TIER 1 Safety Inspection
  • Respond to Control Room phone call at off duty hour, as needed for assistance
  • Come to work at irregular hour for trouble-shooting and/or equipment maintenance, as needed.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires the equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or engineering field, considerable technical and job-relevant training, and ten (10) years related experience in a broad technical field which includes demonstrated technical leadership.
  • Experience supervising technical staff
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required safety and security trainings including the ability to be trained and tested for National Electrician Code
  • Able to follow NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace
  • Ability to plan work, including estimating time and materials for a job
  • Ability to read installation manuals and operation instructions, electrical power system one line diagrams and circuit schematics
  • Knowledge of the principle of three phase system, transformers, motors, generators, circuit breakers, switches, fuses, motor starters, solid state soft starter, VFD, automatic transfer switch, overhead cranes, motor control centers, circuit protections, grounding and bonding, and lighting systems. Ability to specify the devices for its acquirement and installation
  • Familiar with the application of cable trays, wireways, electrical conduits, power cables and its associate fittings
  • Clear & concise communication skills interacting at multiple levels including trades, customers, and team members and demonstrated leadership in safety values and ability to impart values to staff
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in supervising or coordinating work for bargaining unit staff
  • Trade licensed electrician
  • Knowledge of SKM  Power Tools electrical engineering analysis software to do arc flash, short circuit current and Time-Current-Curve (TCC) study
  • Ability to set up DRANETZ power quality monitor and analyze the data

ES&H Requirements

  • Essential functions for this position; arm/hand dexterity, climb low to moderate heights, lift (up to) 30 lbs, good vision, mental sharpness, alertness and working with riggings and mobile cranes
  • Responsible for troubleshooting, Lock-out Tag-out and zero voltage verification
  • Ability to work in a confined space
  • Ability to work in a noisy environment with proper PPE
  • The ability to work with basic hand tools

  • Ability to work irregular hours/days as required
