Job Description

 The Prince George's County Department of Corrections is seeking individuals to fill current and future vacancies for Correctional Officer Academy classes. The position of Correctional Officer Private provides exceptional training and benefits to serious applicants considering a profession in the correctional/Public Safety field. The Department is seeking men and women who exhibit good character, sound judgment, honesty, reliability and integrity.
 This position is designated "Essential" and the incumbent must be willing to participate as a critical/essential employee during emergency situations in the event of a natural, or manmade disaster; special activities/events.  Essential employees are expected to report to work or remain at work when other County employees are granted administrative leave. Employees in this classification will be required to work any of three shifts in order that 24-hour coverage is maintained.

Examples of Work

  • Must be able to wear a mask or face covering indoors for a minimum of 8 hours
  • Provides care, custody and control of inmates in a direct supervision environment.
  • Assures that inmates are searched, bathed, clothed, and assigned to a housing unit.
  • Monitors inmate activities.
  • Drives a County vehicle to transport and escort inmates to and from medical facilities and other locations.
  • Supervises inmates on work detail.
  • Patrols, on foot, the internal and external perimeters of the institution, making periodic inspections of conditions.
  • Performs necessary functions regarding the intake and release of committed inmates/detainees.
  • Provides security for all persons within the institution.
  • Controls the flow of visitors throughout the institution and enforces rules and regulations governing the conduct of visitors.
  • Maintains discipline and orderly conduct.
  • Breaks up fights among inmates, restrains disorderly inmates.
  • Uses appropriate self-defense tactics to deflect assault by inmates.
  • Administers CPR and first aid.
  • Investigates and responds to emergencies and disorders within the Department of Corrections.
  • Operates radios, telephones, and other communication equipment.
  • Prepares routine reports and records electronically.
  • Keeps inventory of various items.
  • Provides counsel and assistance to inmates/detainees.
  • Ensures inmates are afforded fair and equitable treatment.

Minimum Qualifications

• U.S. Citizen or have at least 5 years of Permanent Resident Alien Status
• High school graduate or possess a GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education
• 18 years old at time of application
• Possess a valid driver's license issued in the United States
